Social-Emotional Learning Get a Boost from Classroom Technology
Source Eli Zimmerman, Ed Tech Magazine
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is how “students develop the necessary soft skills to collaborate effectively with their peers” (Zimmerman, Ed Tech Magazine). Integrating the skills of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making into a curriculum can improve classroom collaboration and academic outcomes.
Technology and SEL
In a recent study with Microsoft, there have been 3 pieces of technology that are especially helpful for SEL:
Collaboration Platforms: G-suite and Office 365 are platforms that make it easy for students to work together and implement their SEL skills. A lot of office collaboration is done through similar platforms and getting skills confident in such application will put them ahead.
Artificial Intelligence: Personalized learning allows teachers to adjust course material depending on the students who may have not master a certain skill yet. Aligning lessons and topics based on what each student needs to improve on will give teachers the ability to monitor and support students more efficiently.
Mixed Reality: Augmented and virtual realities gives students the ability to practice what they’ve learned with SEL in real-life stimulated environments. Given these opportunities students are able to raise their own awareness when implementing life skills.
